How our Volunteers Sparks Change in the Valley: Neal’s Story
At Central Valley Habitat for Humanity, we believe that every home we build is more than just walls and a roof—it’s a place where families can thrive. But none of it would be possible without the dedication of our volunteers, like Neal Alexander, who bring skill, heart, and commitment to each project. Neal's journey with Habitat began about five years ago and was inspired by his church groups involvement. His expertise in electrical work has been invaluable, from running rough-in wiring to installing switches, outlets, and ceiling fans. But for Neal, the real reward isn’t just the work—it’s the people.
For Neal, the real reward of volunteering isn't just the work itself, but the people he meets along the way. "Getting to meet [the homeowner] actually puts a face on the building so you get that human touch a little bit, and it just makes it all the sweeter," he shares. This personal connection is what makes volunteering so fulfilling for Neal. He looks forward to each project, appreciating the flexibility that allows volunteers to contribute at their own pace, whether during busy construction phases or in between contractor work.
Neal encourages others to join, regardless of their skill level. "If somebody chooses to work with the electrical side of things," he explains, "it's not necessary that they have training or skills. Much of what we do is very repetitive and with very little instruction, we could turn somebody into a person who could very easily put wires in the back of an outlet." This openness to learning and growth is a hallmark of Habitat's volunteer culture.
Beyond the technical aspects, the most meaningful part of volunteering is the connection with the families who will one day call these houses home. Seeing their faces, hearing their stories, and knowing he played a small role in their journey makes every hour spent on-site worth it. This connection is what drives volunteers like Neal to continue making a difference.
Habitat for Humanity is built on the generosity of volunteers like Neal—people who show up, lend a hand, and make a lasting impact.
