We see many people come and go through volunteering with Central Valley Habitat for Humanity, some return to work with us multiple times and some are just passing through. There are also a few that wonder, “can I actually help? Am I skilled enough?” and the answer is always YES!
But what makes a great volunteer, you may ask? Well, the answer is simpler and shorter than you might think.
A great volunteer is someone that believes in our mission here at Central Valley Habitat for Humanity and is willing to put aside time to help us achieve that mission. It’s THAT simple!
I know, I know, you’re thinking surely there must be more qualifications than that, if that was true then anyone could volunteer. That’s exactly true! Anyone and everyone is welcome to volunteer with us, I mean, our motto is “A Place for Everyone” after all.
According to this article from HelpGuide, volunteering has surprising benefits not just for the cause, but for the individual volunteer. We look for people that are driven, but also for those that need guidance and are unsure. Through volunteering you can learn to be closer to others, work as a team, and much more. So, in short, we’re looking for people that want to learn.
What makes a great volunteer is someone that wants to learn, but what they want to learn is an individual need for each volunteer that comes through Central Valley Habitat. Some want to learn how to use a hammer, others want to learn how to use the skills they have to overcome their disabilities, and still others want to learn how to better serve their community.
If you want to do anything off this list, it’s a sign you might make a great volunteer:
- Combat depression
- Improve your community
- Make friends
- Stay physically healthy
- Help a cause
- Increase your self-confidence
- Make yourself happy
- Combat stress, anger, and fear
- Become part of something bigger
- Serve others
- Advance your career
- Learn valuable job skills
- Achieve your goals
