Our affiliate is officially announcing our participation and plans to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy by building on his vision of the “Beloved Community” in Harrisonburg.

Central Valley Habitat for Humanity is strengthening its commitment to build a world where everyone has a decent place to live and the opportunity for a better future by completing a third and final duplex at Roberts Ct. in Harrisonburg this year.

Currently, we’ve built two duplexes on Roberts Ct., a subdivision on the North end of the city that is ever increasing in developmental and cultural opportunities. This has so far allowed us to place four families in their Habitat homes, with double dedications scheduled on March 17 and April 14. We have the option to build a third and final duplex in this area, placing two more families and creating a Habitat home cul-de-sac.

This effort will add to work undertaken by other Habitats across the county participating in the Beloved Community initiative, including construction of new affordable homes, critical home repairs, and community revitalization.

Habitat for Humanity launched its Beloved Community initiative in 2018, marking the 50th anniversaries of Dr. King’s assassination and the passage of the Fair Housing Act. Habitat organizations across the country mobilized people in their communities to reach out across cultural divides and celebrate our shared humanity. Habitat organizations hosted events, built homes and revitalized neighborhoods in the name of building the Beloved Community.

“In 2019, we renew our pledge to make the concept of a Beloved Community a reality,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “This will never be a world of equality, fairness and human decency, unless we built it. So we build.”

Habitat for Humanity invites others to help build the Beloved Community. Read more about why Habitat is propelling this cause in an essay by Reckford and Habitat for Humanity International COO Tjada McKenna.
